Become a volunteer baker for the Greenpoint Soup Kitchen

Become a volunteer baker for the Greenpoint Soup Kitchen

Want to volunteer at the soup kitchen in Greenpoint but the mealtime doesn’t fit in  your schedule?  Love baking but don’t feel like eating a whole pie yourself!  Feel like “getting your hands dirty” in a little bit of volunteer action to address hunger in the neighborhood?  Then join the Dessert Corps as a volunteer baker for the Greenpoint Soup Kitchen.

The calendar of treats is as follows:

  • Mar 25: Pineapple Upside Down Cake: 5 bakers needed.
  • April 1: Red Velvet Cake: 5 bakers needed
  • April 8: Apple, Carrot, or Zucchini Cake: 9 bakers needed.
  • April 15: Rice Krispies; 8 bakers needed.

If there is a week that you can plug in to bake a sweet treat, send an email to craiskitchen [at] gmail [dot] com letting us know which weeks you plan to bake. The weekend before you will receive a logistic email with detailed drop off info. (FYI: There are regular drop off spots on Tuesdays & Wednesdays both day and nighttime in Williamsburg and Greenpoint. Special arrangements can be made for Monday drop offs as well.)

In general, bi-weekly emails will inform you of the next month of planned treats; feel free to volunteer as little or as much as your schedule and budget permits. In the summer months we plan to provide fresh local fruit through donations from neighborhood CSAs for the volunteer bakers to use. In addition, we hope to be able to subsidize the cost of butter, eggs, and other baking supplies in the near-ish future. Currently, we have a stockpile of disposable/reusable aluminum pans that bakers can pick up (in Williamsburg) and use.

This project was launched in response to President Obama’s call for Americans to step up and serve throughout the year. It is dedicated in the memory of Martin Luther King and his campaign to end hunger. We appreciate the amazing community support and participation and look forward to serving up treats made in kitchens from every corner of Greenpoint and Williamsburg.

Cookie Bars

Cookie Bars

For the Wednesday March 4th meal, Cookie Bars was the theme. 10 volunteer bakers busted out their own lovely versions of the always delectable Chocolate Chip Cookie Bar or Butterscotch Blondies. They were scrumptuosly yummy and loved by all the diners. The moms in the house especially enjoyed the butterscotch blondie with zuchinni. Nothing like sneaking in some veggies with dessert! (Of course, even the adults were loving that “healthy” treat.)

Still no verdict on what is more popular: Chocolate or Butterscotch? I guess we will have to continue researching…
