On the general global level, Craig’s Kitchen is a memorial initiative to end hunger. Locally speaking, we are neighbors and friends who believe in the importance of providing access to healthy, local, organic fruits and vegetables to everyone in our community regardless of income level through direct action projects.
Our mission is to support neighborhood soup kitchens who share in the goal to provide a complete, nourishing meal to all who come to their door, preparing and serving food and meals free-of-charge to individuals, children and families regardless of race, color, sex, age, handicap, religion or national origin.
Within Craig’s Kitchen, our main goal is to ensure that the meals served in our neighborhood soup kitchens are filled with fresh, local, organic vegetables. Through fundraising events, partnerships with local CSA’s, and affiliations with local farms, we hope to help soup kitchens include local and organic ingredients in every dish that comes out of their kitchens, providing the diners with nutritious, delicious, extraordinary meals. It is hard work to run a soup kitchen, let alone provide high quality meals; it requires serious funding and organizing. Through our grassroot efforts, we hope to support to neighborhood soup kitchens as much as we can.

Specifically, we will continue to work hard to organize friends and neighbors who want to donate, volunteer, or help out in preparing the weekly meal at the Greenpoint Soup Kitchen through our Dessert Corp program. We plan to reach out to community members in order to continue to upgrade the meals, helping financially support the kitchen so that it can afford to buy local, organic fruits, vegetables, dairy and meats.

Our name comes from an inspiring member of our community, Craig Murphey. Having voluntered with Craig in the Right Rides Safe Walk program, I was immediately impressed by him; He was a dedicated volunteer and made Safe Walk possible by spending countless hours that year recruiting friends, helping get the word out to the community, and making sure that people could receive a safe escort home. It was not until his death that I learned about his anti-poverty work and the campaigns he was spearheading to connect CSA’s with food pantrys and soup kitchens. His death was a senseless tragedy and our neighborhood and community has lost a valued member. In honor of his quest to be better and make a positive impact on the world we dedicate this project to bring organic fruits and vegetables to our neighborhood soup kitchens in his name.
Hug Life. Be Better.
